Your Ultimate Guide to Planning a Dream Adventure Elopement in 2026
Thinking about ditching the traditional wedding scene for an unforgettable adventure elopement in 2026? You're not alone! More couples than ever are choosing to elope in stunning natural settings, from mountaintops and beaches to quiet forests and sprawling deserts. The freedom, intimacy, and beauty of an adventure elopement are hard to beat. If you're considering saying your vows in an epic, breathtaking location, this guide is for you.
In my own photography practice, I absolutely love every chance I get to capture the magic of adventure elopements, and I know just how exciting (and maybe a little overwhelming) it can be to start planning. So, let’s break it down together.
1. Why an Adventure Elopement?
Before we dive into logistics, let’s talk about why you might choose an adventure elopement in the first place. The idea is simple: get married exactly where and how you want, surrounded by nature or in a place that holds personal significance. Adventure elopements allow you to break free from the constraints of traditional weddings, where you're expected to please family or stick to a rigid schedule.
Whether it’s just the two of you or with a few close loved ones, an adventure elopement lets you make your day truly your own, from the ceremony to the celebration. No timelines. No crowds. Just you, your partner, and your surroundings.
2. Choosing Your Dream Location
This is the fun part! The options are endless, but picking a location that matches your style and vision is key. While New England offers some of the most picturesque spots—like Maine’s rugged coastline or the majestic White Mountains in New Hampshire—maybe your heart is set on a different kind of adventure.
When thinking about your location, ask yourself:
What kind of atmosphere are we going for? Do you want something serene, like a quiet forest, or more dramatic, like a mountaintop?
What activities would you like to include? Hiking? Canoeing? Something more laid-back like a picnic on the beach?
What’s the vibe you’re going for? Remote and untouched or easy access with great views?
Are you willing to travel great distances, or would you rather stick closer to home? For some couples, the elopement and the honeymoon can be rolled into one epic trip, so if you have a bucket list location (I know I have lots), maybe look into what it would look like to actually get married there!
Whether you dream of eloping in the high deserts of the American West or exchanging vows at a cliffside in Iceland, there are endless options for adventure elopements in and outside New England. Let's take a look at a few possibilities:
The American West
The American West offers vast, wild landscapes with a sense of raw beauty and serenity. From the red rock deserts of Utah to the sweeping mountain views of Wyoming, you'll find stunning locations for your adventure elopement. Here are a few of the top spots:
Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming – Dramatic mountain backdrops, alpine lakes, and plenty of hiking opportunities. The park offers several picturesque ceremony spots. If you want to see an elopement I’ve done here, check it out here.
Arches National Park, Utah – Known for its iconic red rock arches and desert beauty, this park is a dream for adventurous couples. The desert is a great option for so many reasons beyond beauty, but one I like to point out is that weather is typically on your side (unless heat ain’t your thing, which is so fair!). The good news here is that the chance of rain is usually minimal, so last minute Plan B’s aren’t typically needed (but always good to have!!).
Yosemite National Park, California – Massive granite cliffs, waterfalls, and sequoia trees make Yosemite one of the most awe-inspiring spots for elopements. Need I say more? Literally epic.
Important Note: For any national park or protected land, you’ll need to check if a special use permit is required to hold your ceremony. Parks like Grand Teton and Yosemite are very popular, so securing your permit early is essential. This is why, even if your vendor list is teeny, it’s a great idea to hire nice and early!
The Pacific Northwest
If you love lush, green forests and stunning coastlines, the Pacific Northwest is a great destination for your elopement. While the weather is definitely more temperate, you can’t beat some of the stunning vistas that the PNW has to offer. I’ve had the honour of capturing so many elopements and weddings in the PNW area, and every time I’m there, I’m still awe-struck by the grandeur of that part of the world.
Olympic National Park, Washington – With its rainforests, rugged coastlines, and snow-capped peaks, Olympic National Park offers diverse settings for your ceremony.
Mount Rainier National Park, Washington – A breathtaking location with wildflower meadows and towering mountains.
Oregon Coast – If you’re dreaming of dramatic cliffs and endless ocean views, the Oregon coast delivers in spades. A secluded beach or coastal bluff can make for an intimate, wild ceremony. Just imagine running hand-in-hand with your new spouse down the expansive beaches of Oregon at sunset…yes please!
International Elopement Destinations
If you're thinking beyond the U.S. and want to elope overseas, there are some truly incredible destinations that will take your breath away. Here are a few top spots for international adventure elopements:
Iceland – Known for its stunning glaciers, volcanic landscapes, waterfalls, and black sand beaches, Iceland is a dream elopement location for couples seeking something truly unique. Locations like the Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon or Skogafoss Waterfall are perfect for an intimate ceremony. I will admit, Iceland has become a major elopement destination for US couples so it can get a little crowded in certain areas. But there are some hidden gems still that I’d be so happy to share with you if we chat about your romantic Icelandic elopement together!
New Zealand – With its epic mountain ranges, lush valleys, and crystal-clear lakes, New Zealand is a paradise for nature lovers. From the majestic Fiordland National Park to the rolling hills of Waikato, there’s no shortage of stunning spots.
Scotland – So fun fact friends, I used to live here in Scotland and when I tell you I cried from its beauty almost daily, that’s not an exaggeration in the slightest. Living here (during COVID btw) was a magical chapter of my life, and I love sharing it with couples. Imagine getting married in a castle, on a cliff, or amidst the misty highlands. Scotland’s rugged beauty makes it an ideal destination for an adventure elopement. If you see yourself having a true adventure, I highly encourage thinking about Scotland. Glencoe or the Isle of Skye are just a couple of incredible places to consider.
Norway – Another fun fact: I also used to live in Denmark and I made it out to Norway for hikes so often because…well it’s totally worth the effort. Fjords, mountains, and dramatic coastlines make Norway a top destination for couples looking for a fairytale setting. Places like the Lofoten Islands or the Geirangerfjord are breathtaking.
South Africa — Not shocking at all, South Africa (specifically Cape Town) is growing so much in popularity as an elopement destination. I mean how could it not— unbeatable mountain views, glimmering blue seas, and jaw-dropping wildlife? Saying I do at the literal tip of the world?? Say less. Oh, except one other thing: while getting there is a wee bit lengthy, once you’re there, it’s SO affordable! Such a great option for winter elopements (because it’s summer there).
Important Considerations for International Elopements:
Permits & Laws: Each country has different regulations for weddings, and some may require specific permits or paperwork for foreign couples. Always research local wedding laws and any necessary documentation. For example, in Iceland, the officiant must be legally registered to marry couples, and you’ll need to submit paperwork to the appropriate government offices before your wedding.
Travel Logistics: Eloping abroad often means longer travel times, different time zones, and different currencies. Be sure to account for travel days, extra luggage for your wedding attire, and any language barriers that might come up. Luckily all of the international locations above are places around the world where English is either the first language, or is spoken so proficiently by everyone, that there shouldn’t be any real issues.
Season & Weather: Weather can be unpredictable, especially in countries like Iceland and Scotland, where you might encounter rain or snow, no matter the season. Be prepared for the elements by packing accordingly and keeping a flexible attitude toward your timeline.
Local Vendors: If you’re planning to hire local vendors for flowers, officiants, or hair/makeup, make sure they’re experienced with elopements and familiar with the logistics of working in remote locations. This is especially important in more remote locations like Iceland or the Scottish Highlands.
3. Logistics: What You Need to Know
Now, let’s talk about the practical stuff. Adventure elopements are all about nature, but that doesn’t mean you can just show up without a plan. The key is balancing spontaneity with a little preparation.
Permits and Regulations
As you can see, each location—whether it’s within the U.S. or abroad—has its own set of rules, from requiring permits in national parks to ensuring your officiant is legally recognised in another country. Researching the legalities and paperwork ahead of time can save you major stress. Luckily, your vendors should be able to help a lot with this stuff.
Accessibility
Think about how far off the beaten path your location is. Will you need to hike with your gear, or will your photographer be able to reach it with all the equipment? For international destinations, travel logistics—like flights, car rentals, and local transportation—will also come into play. Again, count on your vendors for some of this stuff! I also definitely recommend joining some Facebook groups for advice :)
Weather and Backup Plans
Whether you're eloping in the mountains of Wyoming or the cliffs of Cape Town, the weather will always be a factor. Having a backup plan, like a nearby indoor venue or a flexible wedding date, is always a good idea. Make sure your clothing and gear can withstand the conditions, especially in places like Iceland or the Scottish Highlands where the weather can shift in an instant.
4. Getting the Right Vendors for Your Adventure Elopement
One of the biggest advantages of an adventure elopement is working with vendors who understand the vision. The people you hire to help you bring your day to life should be flexible, experienced, and excited to work in unique outdoor settings.
Photographer: This is where I come in! (Hi, I’m Ezra!) Choosing the right photographer is critical, especially for an adventure elopement. You’ll want someone who understands the nuances of outdoor lighting, knows how to make the most of natural beauty, and can capture candid, authentic moments that tell your unique story. You’ll also probably want someone who loves the outdoors as much as you, and is game for a hike if needed! And just as importantly, make sure to put your trust in someone who is confident about your area. This goes especially for those international locations!
Officiant: You’ll need someone who can either meet you at your location or is willing to travel. Many officiants specialise in adventure elopements and can offer guidance on locations, vows, and ceremony structure. One great option: ask a friend! You get another travel buddy, you can be married to your other half by someone you love and trust, and you have someone flexible enough to change plans based on weather (if needed).
Florist and Hair & Makeup: So first of all, this isn’t a necessity, but it’s SUCH a fun perk. Many elopement vendors are used to working in remote locations, so you’ll likely need to hire a florist and stylist who are comfortable with an outdoor setup. Make sure they can bring their A-game even if they have to hike a little to get there!
5. Packing for the Big Day
Unlike a traditional wedding, your adventure elopement may require a bit more thought when it comes to what you bring with you. The most important things are comfort, practicality, and your must-have wedding details. Consider:
Comfortable shoes for walking or hiking
Warm layers (even in the summer, it can get chilly in the mountains)
A lightweight, weather-resistant jacket (just in case)
A waterproof bag to protect your ceremony materials, like vows or rings
Also, don’t forget your wedding details! Things like your dress, rings, bouquet, and any personal items you want in your photos will need to be packed up and transported carefully.
6. Celebrating After Your Elopement
The fun doesn’t have to stop after the ceremony. In fact, many couples enjoy having a small celebration afterward, whether that’s a picnic with a bottle of champagne, a cozy campfire, or a fancy dinner at a nearby inn. Adventure elopements offer a sense of freedom and joy that you can carry into your celebration.
You could also consider planning a post-elopement shoot if you want some extra photos in a completely different setting, or if you want to capture more candid moments of you and your partner exploring the area. I highly recommend doing this if you’ve traveled pretty far away—take advantage!!
