The Ultimate Guide to Proposing in New England: 8 Essential Tips for a Perfect Proposal
Okay, so this is something that I’ve been getting asked about a lot recently, and for good reason! Proposing to your significant other is one of the most memorable moments of your life, and there can be a lot of anxiety around how to do it ‘right’. Whether you’re planning an intimate setting or an elaborate surprise, there are SO many details to consider to make your proposal unforgettable. Because I’m based in the picturesque region of New England, particularly Rhode Island, I’ve tailored this article specifically for my fellow New Englanders, but of course, so many of these tips are great things to keep in mind no matter where you are. Here are some essential tips to think about when planning your proposal to ensure it’s everything you and your partner have dreamed of. PS. The photos in this article are from an ADORABLE proposal I shot last year that warmed my heart! Hope you enjoy!
1. Location, Location, Location
Why the ‘Where’ Matters
The location of your proposal is crucial because it sets the tone for the entire moment. The place you choose should hold significance for both of you, whether it’s where you first met, your favourite vacation spot, or a beautiful scenic overlook. A meaningful location adds a personal touch and makes the memory even more special.
Top New England Proposal Spots
Beavertail Park, Jamestown, RI: Combine ocean views with epic cliffs and beautiful grassy areas at Beavertail. I absolutely LOVE shooting in this location, even when it’s crowded. There are so many little nooks along the cliffs, so it can be either intimate (imagine cozying up on one of the rocks together) or you can make a grand gesture getting down on one knee alongside the expanding ocean views. You’ll be sure to get some applause from tourists and onlookers, so if you’re proposing to someone who loves a good grand gesture, this could be the place!
Acadia National Park, Maine: Propose surrounded by nature’s beauty with stunning mountain and ocean vistas. Need I say more?? If you’re avid hikers and nature is your happy place, this could be, not only a place with so many picturesque spots, but it’s also a romantic date all rolled into one! A HUGE piece of advice I have is to remember that proposing isn’t just a single moment, it’s the whole day! You want to make sure that more than one moment is memorable.
The Berkshires, Massachusetts: I have so many happy memories in the Berkshires, from hiking to strolling through the cute little towns. This region offers charming landscapes and cozy settings perfect for a proposal no matter the season. Yes, even the bitter and rainy cold in the winter season can be the perfect excuse to get cozy in a cabin. What’s more romantic than that???
But, most importantly, when it comes to location, don’t discount the small moments! If your love language is cooking dinner together, then maybe your kitchen is the ultimate spot to pop the question!
2. Timing is Everything
3. Plan the Details
Manicures Matter
Alright, this is one of the biggest after-the-fact notes I get from women (and men!!!) who love to have photo-ready hands to share with the fam (and the ‘gram). If your partner enjoys having well-kept nails, consider encouraging them to get a manicure before the proposal. You can even ‘treat’ them the day before as a romantic surprise! A fresh manicure makes the ring look even more stunning in photos and ensures your partner feels confident showing off their new bling.
Hiring a Photographer
Okay okay, so I’m biased on this one. But, capturing the moment with a professional photographer ensures you’ll have beautiful memories to look back on. A photographer can discreetly capture the proposal and then take some staged photos afterward. I’ve literally hidden in bushes before to capture the exciting moment. But the best part is having a fun couples session right after that you can use to share the exciting news!
Have a Backup Plan
Weather in New England (and let’s be real, everywhere) can be unpredictable. I’ve done a lot of work in the Pacific Northwest, and this is a very needed thing to consider. Always have a backup plan in case of rain or other unexpected events. This could mean having an indoor location option or being flexible with your timing. Maybe pick a place (see how much location matters?) that has both indoor and outdoor spots, juuuuuust in case.
4. Personalise the Experience
Incorporate Personal Touches
Think about what makes your relationship unique and incorporate those elements into your proposal. This could be anything from including your favourite song, a heartfelt letter, or a special piece of jewellery that complements the engagement ring.
Involve Loved Ones
If your partner values the presence of family and friends, consider including them in the proposal. They can be hidden nearby to celebrate immediately after, or you could plan a surprise engagement party.
5. The Ring
6. Practice Your Speech
What to Say
While the moment should be spontaneous, it’s helpful to have an idea of what you want to say. Speak from the heart and express why you want to spend the rest of your life with your partner. Practice your speech to feel more confident and ensure you convey your feelings clearly.
Keep it Personal
Avoid clichés and focus on personal anecdotes and reasons you love your partner. This makes the proposal more meaningful and genuine.
7. Capture the Moment
Photographs and Videos
Ensure the moment is documented with photos or a video. This allows you to relive the moment and share it with family and friends. Professional photographers know how to capture the best angles and lighting, making your proposal look as magical as it felt.
Post-Proposal Shoot
Like I said before, after the proposal, consider a mini engagement photo shoot. This can be a fun way to celebrate and get some beautiful photos in your chosen location. Plus, it gives you a chance to enjoy the moment together without any immediate distractions.
8. Celebrate!
Plan a Celebration
After the proposal, plan a celebration to share your joy with loved ones. This could be a small gathering or a larger party, depending on your preference. It’s a wonderful way to cap off the day and start your journey to marriage surrounded by those you care about.
Enjoy the Moment
Finally, remember to enjoy the moment. Proposals can be nerve-wracking, but they’re also a celebration of your love. Take a deep breath, stay present, and savour the experience.
9. Bonus Tip: Ask for Parental Permission
Why It Matters
This totally isn’t for everyone for a number of reasons, but I want to add it because this recently came up with one of my couples, and for them, a second proposal had to be planned because it was important to the bride that her parents were spoken to beforehand. Involving your partner’s parents by asking for their permission can be a significant and respectful gesture. This tradition shows that you honour and value their family, and it can add a layer of thoughtfulness to your proposal.
How to Approach It
Plan the Conversation: Consider the best way to approach your partner’s parents. This might be a formal meeting or a casual conversation, depending on your relationship with them.
Express Your Intentions: Clearly communicate your love for their child and your intentions for the future. Share why you believe your partner is the one for you and how you plan to make them happy.
Respect Their Wishes: Understand that this can be an emotional moment for parents. Be prepared for their questions and be respectful of their thoughts and feelings.
Include Them in the Moment After receiving their blessing, you might want to involve the parents in the proposal itself, either by having them present or by planning a post-proposal celebration. This inclusion can make the moment even more special and memorable for everyone involved.

Proposing is such a big milestone in your relationship, and with these tips, you can ensure it’s as perfect as you’ve envisioned.
